Is your sleep ageing you?

We all know how sleep refreshes and rejuvenates us. In addition to that, it vanishes our dark circles and brings glow to our skin naturally. Sleep is called beauty sleep in popular connotations for a reason. It is believed that a mandatory sleep of seven to eight hours is essential or it can cause fatigue, dull skin, puffiness, skin discolouration, weight gain and early aging. Hence our duration of sleep greatly decides how we look.

Anyone can see you and judge whether you are tired or fresh. While our quality and duration of sleep directly impacts the health of our skin, there is also a possibility that sleep may in fact be causing skin problems for you. What? You may ask as this is really surprising right? While the duration and sleep quality may have positive impacts, the position you sleep in may be a cause for your acne, wrinkles, etc. Your sleeping position can greatly affect how you look by giving you a flatter cheek on one side of your face, acne, pimples and puffy eyes. A small thing such as your sleeping position may let you have premature signs of aging.

While smoking, drinking, sun exposure, eating lot of sugar and junk food were considered prime contributors to aging, it can in fact be your sleeping position which is giving you wrinkles if you do not drink or smoke. Such a small factor could cause fine lines and aging, who had thought?

Here we are going to discuss what are the skin-related consequences of sleeping in different positions-

Sleeping Upside down on your tummy

This is the worst sleeping positions. You are sleeping with your face pressed against the pillow for full 8 hours and this could seriously cause a lot of damage to the skin. You skin needs to breathe but it is unable to do so when you sleep with your face on pillow. The pores and follicles of the skin get clogged and blocked as a result you get acne and fine lines. You may have already noticed sleep lines on your face on getting up, if you do not want these lines to become permanent, refrain from sleeping in this position. You eye fluid also rushes near eyes giving you puffy eyes.

Sleeping on your side

While this position is not as worse as the sleeping on your stomach position, but this position can also put unnecessary pressure on one side of your cheek and cause lines and wrinkles on that side of the skin. It can cause fine lines around the mouth and cheeks. Try to keep alternating sides each day if you want to sleep on your side with minimum damage to your skin. It may also cause your skincare products to rub into the pillow.

Sleeping on your back

Sleeping on your back is probably the ideal position to sleep in. In this position your face will not be touching the pillow so there will be no exchange of oils, germs and dust so this will prevent acne and pimples. Sleeping on your back will also not cause any friction of the facial skin against the pillow which will avoid fine lines and wrinkles. The fluid 3will also not collect around eyes and prevent puffiness.
